It's All In Your Mind

"The energy of the mind is the essence of life."
~ Aristotle

If you tracked your thoughts for a day you would be both pleased and proud and shocked and horrified at the non stop free floating stream of imaginings.

Our experiences are a manifestation of the pattern of our thought life. Monitoring our thinking is as essential as the quality of our food, air, water, and our experience of love.

We become what we think about.

"It's all in your mind." ~ George Harrison

Several times each week I do a mind dump on paper. Once I'm done, I tear the paper to bits, toss it and burn it. This helps me cast away most of which is of little importance and beyond my control. I find this release helps me disengage and gives my grey matter a better chance at overnight rejuvenation.

"Looking at the beauty in the world is the first step of purifying the mind." ~ Amit Ray

I begin each morning with a few minutes of quiet observance. Noting my emotional temperature, I offer gratitude and set my intention as I prepare to meet the responsibilities of the day. The decision to monitor my thoughts more closely has had profound effect on my transformation journey.

Clarity of thought breeds clarity of purpose. The peace you are seeking is all in your mind.

Are you making time to evaluate the quality of your thought life?

"A man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind." ~ James Allen

Just Above Water

"You don't drown because you can't breathe. You drown because you try to breathe what is not breathable."
~ Katherine Catmull

As fast-paced as my days can be, each year with the Holidays approaching, my focus leans toward projects I am convinced I must get done before the first carol is sung.

An indication of this period of stress and heightening anxiety is shallow breathing as
like most moms I often find myself in the middle of an ocean of obligations that hardly my two hands alone can meet.

Without fail, I get overwhelmed and begin feeling like a failure as the heaviness of the fear of not working it all in takes hold of my ankles and threatens to pull me under. My struggle to dog paddle and keep my nose just above water turns fear into the paralysis of stagnation.

The Holidays should be an enjoyable time balanced between self-care and responsibilities to work, family, and friends. When I feel myself sinking, I remember that I am in control of how much I determine to take on. Fortunately, I am learning to resist the urge to take on more than twenty-four hours can reasonably sustain.

As the weeks get shorter, try to maintain awareness of what you have already planned to take on and have a standard "no" ready for prompt delivery.

The priority of self-care applies daily and more so during the holidays.

Plan ahead and weigh that which is most important against what is not. If it is not a necessity, consider releasing it. Ask for help and consider delegating a few tasks you have taken on in the past. Determine to spend at least one hour each day focused in your breath and what you need to feel and be well.

Treat your "me time" as sacred and protect it without guilt or regret.

Have you begun to experience that sinking feeling of overwhelm?
What tasks can you release or delegate?
What is your self-care plan for keeping your head above water this year?

What Are You Learning?

"Mistakes are the growing pains of wisdom."
~ William Jordan

It is difficult to keep the focus on self during the toughest lessons. We are our own best teacher, but only if we are paying attention.

Physical illness, crisis of faith, and emotional stress and upheaval, challenge the growth process. Such times force us to examine the chinks in our armor; the vulnerable places within that scare us into the avoidance of change.

Be mindful that each crisis seeks to teach us something about ourselves.

There are always places within in need of a revamp or recharge; an aspect of our character that fuels our outlook and our actions. Each lesson highlights a path that can enhance our abilities to operate and embrace Universal love more fully and completely.

"Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?"
~ Luke 6:42

It's a difficult look, but a necessary one. There are always lessons to be gleaned vicariously and it's far more tempting to get caught up in drama outside of our own lives.

However, the true pearls of wisdom are the ones presented through our personal experiences.

Become your own best teacher and learn your lessons well.

Have you been distracted from your own growth by the growing pains of others?
Are you willing to allow the lessons in your growing pains to make you vulnerable to change?
What pearls of wisdom in your growing pains are you currently overlooking?
